A Journey Through Decades: My Life’s Lessons and Adventures

As I reflect on the chapters of my life, I’m reminded of the remarkable twists and turns that have shaped my journey. From sipping tea with Presidents to sharing laughter over dinner with Prime Ministers, I’ve had the privilege of rubbing shoulders with luminaries. Yet, like each of you, my path has also been strewn with its fair share of challenges and setbacks.

Come, join me on a spirited ride through the decades, as I recount the moments that have moulded me and the invaluable wisdom I’ve picked up along the way.

First Decade: Embracing the Joy of Learning and Smiles

Behold, that cheerful child on the right (picture). As I look back on my initial decade, I’m reminded of my youthful enthusiasm and my eagerness to dive into life’s adventures. With a heart full of excitement, I revelled in new experiences, always striving to bring smiles to the faces around me. I excelled in numerous pursuits, though not always as the star of the show, a fact that initially frustrated my ambitions.

It was during these formative years that some crucial lessons began to take root: the world can be a tough place, requiring us to summon our inner strength; a positive outlook often yields richer rewards; setbacks are part of the journey, but our resilience defines us; and above all, love and cherish your dear mother.

Second Decade: Navigating the Waters of Uncertainty

Ah, the era of uncertainty, my second decade. This phase of life was marked by choices, some wise and others, well, not so much.

Opting to part ways with traditional schooling at 16 was a daring move, a rebellion against a system that felt stifling. I explored AFL football, gaining some traction in the semi-pro leagues, whilst embarking on an apprenticeship in the printing industry that didn’t quite ignite my passion. As I stood at the precipice of adulthood, I looked at the experienced tradesmen around me and questioned the path ahead. Doubt and ambition waged a silent battle within me.

Through this turmoil, a series of vital lessons emerged: seize the opportunities life presents, for they might not knock twice; education is the bridge to prosperity; never settle for a life that doesn’t resonate with your heart’s desires; good enough rarely leads to greatness; seeking guidance from those who know better is a mark of wisdom.

Third Decade: Blossoming in the Garden of Experience

Ah, the decade of growth and evolution. This chapter saw me tread into the realm of sales, much to the chagrin of my hardworking father, who had his reservations about salesmen. My diligent efforts bore fruit as I quickly ascended to a management position at a prominent national entity. Navigating the dynamic landscape of corporate responsibility, I revelled in victories, like doubling revenues and reviving struggling operations. Beyond the boardroom, my football dreams fell short, but my management journey soared, allowing me access to the executive suite.

The third decade held its own treasures: grasp opportunities decisively, for windows of opportunity are fleeting; invest in self-improvement, a realm often neglected; envy stalls progress; meticulous planning delivers triumphs; courage and confidence are allies; mentors and ceaseless learning are the paths to growth.

Fourth Decade: Confronting Challenges and Family Bonds

My fourth decade brought executive heights and unforeseen familial twists. As I reached the pinnacle of senior management, life threw me a curveball. Family circumstances led me to relinquish my corporate throne and embark on a new journey.

With an infant in tow, I founded an award-winning executive training venture, while also participating actively in industry leadership roles. Amidst this whirlwind, I ventured into politics, stepping into the federal Commonwealth parliament, and embarked on a new phase of service to the community.

This era yielded transformative insights: resilience is a formidable weapon against overwhelming odds; self-interest often diverges from shared enthusiasm; start-ups demand more than just sweat; meticulous planning fuels action; life’s richness transcends monetary measures.

Fifth Decade: Navigating the Political Arena

The fifth decade, a chapter marked by parliamentary service and academia. I delved into the intricate dance of politics, where perceptions often trump reality. Calm navigation proved pivotal for sound decision-making, and planning remained my compass. Once politics jettisoned me I sought university education.

I discovered the spectrum of human knowledge: those who think they know, those unaware of their ignorance, and those who acknowledge and act on their need for understanding. This era also marked my commitment to lifelong learning, a tenet I still hold dear.

Sixth Decade: The Odyssey of Leadership Continues

With my sixth decade came stewardship of various national industry associations, a role I embraced with vigour. Fostering growth, steering policy, and enriching markets became my calling. Amidst this, I also authored my first book, delving into the intriguing realm of franchising and small businesses.

In this bustling period, I realised that sharing insights and advice is deeply rewarding. Planning remained paramount, both in business and in life, while the joys of family reinforced the importance of balance.

And Now: Decade of Words and Narratives

My current decade spotlights the art of leadership, as I speak about authentic leadership and pen political thrillers. Specialising in the captivating arena of politics, I weave tales of power and intrigue, inspired by the fascinating characters that populate our world stage.

Drawing from my insider’s perspective, I demystify the craft of leadership and governance. The lessons from this era? Writing is a continuous challenge; life itself is an intricate puzzle; and, above all, treasure the moments with loved ones, as time is fleeting.
